1918 - The Start of West Shining Tree, and the Development of the Atlas Gold Mine by the Atlas Gold Mines, Ltd.
Gold within the West Shining Tree area of Northern, Ontario, Canada, within the unorganized Sudbury, District was discovered in 1907. Much attention at the time was focus on prospecting the area for gold within quartz veining which escalated at a rapid pace by 1918. This massive staking rush soon resulted in the building of a 20 mile wagon road that connected with Westree, Ontario, Canada. Westree at the time was rather known as a station that was build on the Canadian National Railway, and was 80 miles north of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Gold within this area is considered to occur within quartz veining that can range in various sizes. Much of the geological rock formations are considered to also be various that range from pillow lavas, rusty carbonate, hornblende schist, conglomerate, greywacke, and porphyry, that is mainly of Keewatin. For the most part it was rather stated that not enough work was done in the area in 1918, to determine the extent of the gold vein system. From all development which had started to first escalate in 1918, had resulted in short ore-shoots.
It was by 1918, when the Atlas Gold Mines, Limited had commence prospecting on one claim known as No. 2504. Much of the claim at the time was also situated one half a mile from Westree, and became located on the south end of Waspika Lake, in MacMurchy Township. By this time the company had sunk a few test pits on a number of veins before an Adit was driven on September, 1918, within the hillside. Its main attention was aimed a prospecting a gold bearing quartz vein that strike to the east-west, which had outcrops at about 60 feet above the fill top.

For the major part of 1919, the Atlas Gold Mines, Limited had engaged in assessment work for the most part of that year. Prior to development, the camp area was built, and an Adit was officially driven for a distance of 35 feet. In addition to this, the main Adit of the Atlas Gold Property was driven on the south-west shore of Wasapika Lake, on what was known as the No. 1 vein. With development escalating the company had additionally commence shaft sinking phase on what was known as the Evelyn Vein. The No. 1 shaft operation at the time was driven by hand, and had reach its own depth of 21 feet. It was rather developed 300 feet west of the main camp area.
